Tearful Ben Shephard struggles to speak as he says ‘where there is life there is hope’ for Kate Garraway’s husband Derek

Reflecting on the heartbreaking interview, in which Kate admitted that Derek may never recover, Ben was forced to pause and compose himself.

As his eyes filled with tears, Ben told GMB viewers: “We’re sending so much love and prayers to Derek.

“Where there’s life there’s hope and no matter how bleak it might be, or how bad it is, Derek is still there and we all, absolutely…”

The GMB presenter was then forced to break off and take a deep breath, before mentioning Kate and Derek’s two children, Darcey, 14, and Billy, 10.

“..agree that where there is life there is hope and we will keep our fingers crossed and prayers for Derek and Darcey and Bill and for Kate,” Ben concluded.

Ben’s co-host, Ranvir Singh, then told viewers they would be cutting to a commercial break.

The emotional moment came an hour after Kate had appeared on Good Morning Britain via video link from her north London home.

It was the first time she had spoken in depth about Derek’s battle with Covid-19, which began at the end of March.

Earlier in the show, Ben had co-hosted Kate’s first TV interview about Derek

During the heartbreaking interview, Kate recalled the last words she said to Derek before he was put in an induced coma on April 5.

The 53-year-old star said: “He couldn’t really speak to me because of the mask, but he was begging me, ‘I feel like I’m suffocating, please let them put me in a coma’, because there was a debate about that.

“But I said ‘no we’ve got to wait’ because if his lungs can handle it that’s better. Then on the Sunday morning they rang me up and said we’re going to be him in a coma, and he just said to me, ‘I love you, I have to leave you’, and I said ‘It’s only for three or four days and you’re going to fine this is good and good’.

He said to me, ‘You have saved my life, I don’t just mean now I mean marrying me and the children,’  and I said I love you I love you and then he was gone and that was it.”

Kate confirmed that Derek, 52, is now free from Covid-19 but admitted the damage it has caused to his body is significant.

She added: “It’s wreaked extraordinary damage on his body and we don’t know if he can recover from that.”
