On June 5, 2020, in her first television appearance since Derek was rushed to hospital with coronavirus in March 2020, an emotional Kate said: “He’s still with us. He has fought the most extraordinary battle.

“But you know, the fact that he is still here and is holding on. I’m just so grateful he’s still here. And I’ve got the option of praying and hoping.

“He is very very sick. And as time goes on, it’s a virus, it’s a little bit like a computer virus, there seems to be a flicker of hope and then other things emerge and he’s fighting that.

“It’s affected him from the top of his head to the tips of his toes.”

Kate added: “He’s now covid free, the fight of the virus has been won.

“But it’s wreaked extradorinary damage on his body and we don’t know if he can recover from that.

“It is an absolute miracle that he’s still here. I wish for some one, if I could just have one more.”

The GMB presenter also revealed that her husband is now diabetic, due to his ordeal.

Kate said: “MRI showed that he has damage everywhere, holes in his heart, his liver is impacted, and his pancreas . . . well, he’s now very, very diabetic which he wasn’t before.”

Kate and her family haven’t been able to visit Derek due to NHS guidelines, but staff have held a phone up so that she can talk to him and play music over FaceTime.

Many stars such as Piers Morgan and Ben Shephard, who she hosts Good Morning Britain with, have sent their best wishes to the star and her husband.


Piers tweeted: “This breaks my heart. Few happier, more positive people than @kategarraway. Or a more loyal, decent friend & colleague.

“So many families like hers going through so much unimaginable anguish in this crisis. Sending all my love to Kate & continuing to root for Derek.”

She’s thanked everyone for their ongoing support and wished other family’s going through similar struggles her best wishes.
